Russian-Japanese Research Center for Microbiology, Metagenomics and Infectious Diseases

In accordance with the program for the development of scientific and international activities at the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University in February 2010, the Russian-Japanese Research Center for Microbiology, Metagenomics and Infectious Diseases was opened. It unites employees of specialized Departments - Microbiology named after Assoc. Professor B.M. Zelmanovich, Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology with a postgraduate course, Children's Infectious Diseases with a postgraduate course, and Tuberculosis with a postgraduate course.

From the Japanese side, the curator of the Center is the Head of the International Medical Research and Education Center IMERS (Niigata, Japan), honorary professor at KrasSMU, Professor Tatsuo Yamamoto. Professor T. Yamamoto initiated the creation of the Сenter and regularly visits the University to resolve issues related to the implementation of joint research and educational projects.

The goals of the Scientific Center are the implementation of basic and applied research in the field of microbiology, metagenomics and infectious diseases; development and implementation of new technologies for the diagnosis and correction of pathological conditions of infectious genesis.

Employees of the Сenter participate in the Russian-Japanese project to study the molecular genetic characteristics of methicillin-resistant strains of S. aureus (MRSA), which are one of the main causative agents of nosocomial and community-acquired infections (Doctor of Biological Science, Associate Professor O.E. Khokhlova, Center Researcher N.K. Potkina, teacher D.N. Akusheva). The staff is doing a lot of work to study the molecular genetic characteristics of pneumococci and their role in the infectious pathology of children (PhD, Associate Professor I.N. Protasova); conducts research on the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance of tuberculosis pathogens (PhD, Associate Professor A.G. Savitskaya). Together with health authorities, employees conduct research on the study of current pathogens of purulent-inflammatory complications in oncological and surgical patients PhD, associate Professor O. V. Peryanova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor O.E. Khokhlova, Center Researcher N.K. Potkina, Senior Teacher I. A. Larionova; Ph.D. T.I. Lobova). Projects implemented at the Center are supported by international, Federal, regional and intra-University grants; research results are published in Russian and international journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus database, including "Issues of Oncology", "Antibiotics and Chemotherapy", "Infection and Immunity", "Infectious Diseases", "Pediatrics", "Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobial Chemotherapy", "PLOS One", "Journal of Microbiological Methods", "Scientific Reports", "Journal of Cluster Science", and "Applied Nanoscience".

Employees working under the Center’s programs have completed internships in leading scientific organizations of the Russian Federation and Japan, and participate in international and Russian congresses. Within the framework of the international network educational program G-MedEx, Niigata University students and specialists conduct training and research at the Center. According to the program of academic mobility for targeted training of KrasSMU specialists, Associate Professor at the Department of Microbiology A.G. Savitskaya graduated from the graduate school in Microbiology and Infectiology at the Medical School of the Niigata University and received a PhD.

The Center organizes scientific and practical seminars and conferences for students and young scientists with the participation of leading domestic and foreign experts on pressing problems of microbiology and epidemiology of infectious diseases. As part of the educational activities of the Russian-Japanese Center, Professor Tatsuo Yamamoto has repeatedly given lectures to students on pressing problems of clinical microbiology; held master classes for students and teachers.

The priority areas of scientific and technological development in the Russian Federation indicate a transition to personalized medicine, high-tech healthcare and health-saving technologies, including through the rational use of drugs (primarily antibacterial). Solving such important tasks of modern society as reducing the incidence of human diseases, controlling hospital-acquired infections, and progress in the treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases requires joint efforts of specialists from different countries. The Russian-Japanese Research Center for Microbiology, Metagenomics and Infectious Diseases successfully contributes to the solution of these problems.
